New visitor attraction for St Ann

From The Jamaica Observer

A new visitor attraction is scheduled to be opened on December 11 at Port Rhoades Sports Club, the former Kaiser Sports Club, in Discovery Bay, St Ann.

Titled Showkart, the attraction is a two-hour morning show that features cart races copying the annual Jamaican National Push Cart Derby, an event which had its beginnings at the sports club in 1975 and became an international institution.

The multi-attraction package also includes traditional music, dancing, folklore, treasure hunts, and exhibitions of local art and craft presented by community residents.

Showkart also typifies scenes and legends from the Cool Runnings movie which were inspired by the Push Cart Derby.

It is the brainchild of Historic Tours Jamaica (HTJ), based in Discovery Bay, and the Kaiser Retirees Association, with input from the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission, Discovery Bay All-Age School, Noranda Community Council, and the Rhoades Sports Club.

According to Tour Director Lindy Forbes, the opening is timed to coincide with the start of the Winter tourist season on December 15.

“The show is structured around community tourism and is based on the push cart derby which has a strong pull internationally,” said Forbes.

“The derby has sentimental value to two generations of community residents who played a part in the derby or in sections of Cool Runnings which was filmed at the site in 1993.”

Principals of HTJ include Lance Neita, historian, writer and tourism advisor.

The attraction will be presented on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9:30 am to 12 noon.
